Dutch Merrick entered the world of “gun wrangling” for film in 1996, transitioning from a background in competitive action-pistol shooting in Southern California. Armed with certifications as an Instructor of Rifle, Pistol, and Shotgun disciplines, in addition to Range Safety Officer, Dutch brings an extensive wealth of expertise to the film industry.
A devoted member of IATSE Local 44 since 1998, Dutch has significantly contributed to the industry, serving on its Executive Board for an impressive 14 years. In 2019, he was elected to President of the local by a record margin, marking the pinnacle of his union journey. IATSE Local 44, Property Craftspersons, is the largest craft-union Local in Hollywood.
Additionally, Dutch is a founding member of the Weapons Safety Working Group of the Entertainment Technology and Services Association (ESTA). His dedication to excellence goes beyond official roles, encompassing authorship, public speaking, and recognition as an award-winning filmmaker.
Dutch Merrick has ascended as a recognized authority on film set safety, making appearances in more than 60 national TV and print interviews. Renowned media outlets, including ABC's Good Morning America and the New York Times, have highlighted him as a passionate advocate for improving working conditions and fostering a positive impact in the film industry.
As an official Instructor for the IATSE Training Trust Fund and through his company, Prop Gun Safety, He teaches monthly Set Safety workshops to fellow film professionals in LA and around the US.
